July is full summer – long days, plenty of colour, and lots of harvesting. The key this month is simple: water well, feed regularly, and keep on top of quick maintenance jobs (like deadheading and tying in), so your garden stays healthy and thriving through the warmer weeks.
July jobs in the garden
Garden protection & weather prep
Hot spells can dry pots in hours, so check containers daily and water early morning or evening. Add a mulch layer to pots and borders to help hold moisture, and consider moving delicate containers into light shade during extreme heat.
Lawn care
In dry weather, let the lawn grow a little longer and avoid mowing too short. Water only if needed (and ideally early morning). Continue edging and remove weeds before they seed.
Veg patch & seed prep
July is prime time for harvesting, but it’s also a great month to keep sowing for later crops. Keep tomatoes fed, pinch out sideshoots, and tie in climbing veg. Continue succession sowing of quick crops like salads, radish and beetroot, and keep an eye out for pests on brassicas and beans.
Trees & shrubs
Many shrubs and climbers put on lots of growth now – keep tying in and lightly trim where needed. If fruit trees are overloaded, thin fruit to help the remaining crop grow well and reduce the risk of branches snapping.
Wildlife
Keep a shallow water source topped up for birds and pollinators, especially during hot weather. Choose bee-friendly plants for pots and borders, and leave some seed heads for wildlife where you can.

July garden FAQs
What’s the best time to water in July?
Early morning is ideal, or evening if that’s easier. Aim for a deep soak rather than little-and-often sprinkling.
Should I keep feeding plants in July?
Yes – regular feeding keeps flowers coming and helps fruiting plants (like tomatoes) produce well. Tomato feed is best once flowers and fruit are forming.
Why do my pots keep wilting even after watering?
In hot weather, pots can dry out quickly or become water-repellent. Water slowly, repeat after a few minutes, and consider adding mulch or moving the pot into light shade during peak heat.
Can I still sow vegetables in July?
Definitely. Quick crops like salad leaves, radish, beetroot and carrots can still be sown, and sowing little-and-often keeps harvests coming.
How do I keep hanging baskets looking good all month?
Water daily in warm spells, feed regularly, and deadhead spent blooms to encourage fresh flowers.
