June is when the garden hits its stride – borders are filling out, veg crops are racing ahead, and pots and baskets need regular care to keep them looking their best. A little routine now (watering, feeding and deadheading) goes a long way towards a colourful, healthy garden through summer.
June jobs in the garden
Garden protection & weather prep
Warm days can dry pots quickly, especially hanging baskets. Water early morning or evening, and add mulch to containers and beds to help retain moisture. Be prepared for sudden hot spells – a quick check each day can prevent plants from wilting.
Lawn care
Keep mowing regularly, but avoid cutting too short in dry weather. If it’s been hot, let the grass sit slightly longer and water only if needed (early morning is best). Trim edges and remove weeds before they spread.
Veg patch & seed prep
June is all about maintaining and harvesting. Keep crops well-watered, tie in climbing plants, and pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes. Continue succession sowing (small batches every couple of weeks) for ongoing salads and summer veg. Net brassicas and fruit if pests or birds are a problem.
Trees & shrubs
Many shrubs and climbers will be putting on lots of growth. Tie in new shoots, and prune spring-flowering shrubs that have finished. Watch for pests like aphids and treat early. This is also a good time to thin heavy fruit sets on apples/pears to improve the size and health of the remaining fruit.
Wildlife
June is a busy month for pollinators. Plant up with nectar-rich flowers and keep a shallow water source topped up. Avoid using harsh treatments when bees are active, and leave some flowers to go to seed for wildlife.

June garden FAQs
How often should I water in June?
It depends on the weather, but pots and baskets can need watering daily in warm spells. Water early morning or evening, and aim for a deep soak rather than a quick sprinkle.
What should I feed plants with in June?
Most flowering plants benefit from regular feeding, and tomatoes love a weekly tomato feed once flowers appear. Slow-release fertiliser in pots helps too, especially if you’re heading away.
Why are my hanging baskets drying out so fast?
Wind and sun can dry them quickly. Water thoroughly, consider adding a liner or water-retaining compost, and remove spent flowers so the plant puts energy into new blooms.
Should I deadhead in June?
Yes – deadheading keeps many plants flowering for longer. It’s one of the quickest ways to keep borders and containers looking fresh all month.
What can I still sow in June?
Plenty. You can keep sowing fast crops like salad leaves, beetroot, carrots, radish and herbs, and you can sow small batches regularly to extend your harvest.
