There’s something magical about planting bulbs in autumn – a quiet investment that rewards you with a burst of colour come spring. Whether you’re dreaming of daffodils, alliums, crocuses or tulips, now is the perfect time to get started.
Here are our top tips for getting the most from your autumn bulbs:
Pick the right spot for your bulbs
Most bulbs prefer well-drained soil and plenty of sun. If your garden is shady, opt for varieties like snowdrops or bluebells which tolerate lower light.
Plant at the right depth
A good rule of thumb is to plant your bulb at a depth of two to three times its height. Too shallow and they may not bloom – too deep and they may struggle to emerge.
Watch the weather
Plant when the soil is moist but not waterlogged – usually between September and early November. If the ground’s still warm, the roots will get a great head start.
Protect from pests
Squirrels and mice love freshly planted bulbs! Try covering newly planted areas with netting or choose bulbs that are less tempting, like daffodils and alliums.
Group for impact
For a natural look, plant in clumps or drifts of odd numbers. A cluster of 5 or 7 tulips will look far more striking than a single flower.
