December is all about keeping the garden protected through the coldest weeks, while adding a bit of festive magic at home and outdoors. It’s a great time to tidy up, look after wildlife, and make sure pots and borders are ready for winter – and of course, it’s Christmas tree season!
December jobs in the garden
Garden protection & weather prep
Keep an eye on frost and icy nights. Use fleece/cloches to protect tender plants, and move delicate pots into a sheltered spot. Make sure containers aren’t sitting in water – raise them on pot feet and check drainage holes are clear. Brush heavy snow off shrubs/conifers gently to prevent damage.
Lawn care
Avoid walking on frosty grass where possible. Keep the lawn clear of leaves and debris, and mow only if conditions are mild and dry (with the mower set high). Clear paths and patios to prevent slippery build-up and keep outdoor areas safe.
Veg patch & seed prep
Harvest what you can, then clear spent crops and add compost or mulch to protect the soil. If the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged, it’s a good time to improve beds ready for spring. Keep winter veg protected during cold snaps.
Trees & shrubs
Check stakes, ties and supports after windy weather. Mulch around shrubs and borders to help protect roots and improve soil structure over winter (avoid piling mulch against stems). If you’re planting bare-root trees/hedging, December can be a good time in suitable conditions.
Wildlife
Keep bird feeders topped up and provide fresh water (defrost if needed). A little regular support makes a big difference in winter. Leave a quiet corner for wildlife shelter and avoid disturbing nesting/roosting spots.

December garden FAQs
How do I keep my Christmas tree fresh for longer?
Choose a fresh tree, make a small cut off the base before putting it in a stand, and keep the water topped up daily. Position it away from radiators and open fires if possible.
When’s the best time to buy a Christmas tree?
If you want it to last right through the festive period, many people buy in early-to-mid December and keep it well-watered. The key is choosing a fresh tree and caring for it properly.
Should I protect outdoor pots in December?
Yes – containers are vulnerable to freezing and waterlogging. Raise pots on feet, check drainage, and wrap tender plants with fleece during cold snaps.
Can I still do garden jobs in December?
Absolutely – just pick mild, dry days. Winter is great for tidying, mulching, checking supports, and prepping beds for spring.
Should I keep feeding birds in winter?
Yes – December is one of the most important months to help wildlife. Keep feeders topped up and provide fresh water, especially when it’s freezing.
