November is all about getting the garden winter-ready. Days are shorter, temperatures drop, and it’s the perfect time to protect plants, tidy up leaves, and do a few practical jobs now that will make spring much easier. It’s also the month for seasonal celebrations – and fireworks are a big part of that for many families.
November jobs in the garden
Garden protection & weather prep
Frosts become more regular, so protect tender plants with fleece and move delicate pots into a sheltered spot. Check containers aren’t waterlogged (raise them on pot feet if needed), and insulate pots if you’ve got plants that stay outdoors. If you have a greenhouse, keep it ventilated on mild days and close up before evenings cool down.
Lawn care
Keep the lawn clear of fallen leaves to prevent yellow patches and disease. Mow only when needed and when conditions are dry, with the blades set higher. Avoid walking on frosty grass where possible.
Veg patch & seed prep
Clear spent crops, add compost or soil improver, and mulch beds to protect soil structure over winter. Lift and store any tender veg if frosts are expected, and keep winter crops protected from pests and cold snaps where you can.
Trees & shrubs
November is a great month for planting many trees and shrubs while plants are dormant. Stake new trees if needed, and add mulch around the base (but don’t pile it against the stem). Keep an eye out after windy weather and re-firm any plants that have rocked in the ground.
Wildlife
Natural food is scarce now, so keep feeders topped up and provide fresh water (defrost if needed). Leave a few seed heads and a quiet corner for overwintering insects, and check that ponds or shallow dishes are accessible.

November garden FAQs
Should I protect plants in November?
Yes – tender plants and containers are most at risk as frosts become more frequent. Fleece and moving pots into shelter can prevent a lot of winter damage.
What should I do with fallen leaves?
Clear them regularly from lawns and paths. You can compost them, or collect them to make leaf mould — a brilliant free soil conditioner for next year.
Can I still plant in November?
Yes – it’s a good time to plant many trees and shrubs while they’re dormant, as long as the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged.
Do I need to mow the lawn in November?
Only occasionally, and only when it’s dry enough. Keep the cut higher and avoid mowing in frosty or very wet conditions.
Should I feed birds in November?
Definitely. Food is harder to find now, so regular feeding and fresh water really help wildlife through the colder months.
