September is a lovely in-between month – you can still enjoy late-summer colour, but it’s also the perfect time to start preparing for autumn. With cooler nights and (often) a bit more rain, many garden jobs become easier again – especially lawn repairs, planting, and getting the veg patch ready for the next season.
September jobs in the garden
Garden protection & weather prep
Temperatures can dip at night, so keep an eye on tender plants and bring delicate pots into shelter if needed. September is also a great time to tidy and refresh containers, and start thinking about early autumn planting.
Lawn care
This is one of the best months for lawns. The soil is still warm, but the weather is cooler – ideal for overseeding, repairing bare patches, and applying an autumn lawn feed. Keep mowing as needed, but you can start raising the cutting height as growth slows.
Veg patch & seed prep
Keep harvesting, clear spent crops, and improve soil by adding compost or well-rotted manure. September is also the month to start planning autumn/winter beds and sowing or planting crops for the cooler months (depending on space and weather).
Trees & shrubs
Early autumn is a great time to plant, move or divide some garden plants while the ground is still warm. Keep climbers tied in, and tidy summer-flowering shrubs where needed. Collect seeds from favourite flowers if you’d like to grow them again next year.
Wildlife
As natural food sources change, keep water available and consider leaving a few seed heads and berries for birds. September is also a good time to add pollinator-friendly autumn plants to support wildlife into the cooler months.

September garden FAQs
Is September a good time to fix the lawn?
Yes – it’s one of the best. Warm soil helps seeds germinate, and cooler weather reduces stress on new grass.
Can I still plant in September?
Definitely. Many shrubs and perennials establish really well in early autumn, giving them a head start before next spring.
Should I start feeding the birds again in September?
If you’ve eased off over summer, September is a good time to start topping feeders up again, especially as the weather cools.
What should I do with my veg patch now?
Keep harvesting, remove spent crops, and improve the soil with compost. It’s a great time to plan what you’ll grow next year too.
When do I start thinking about spring bulbs?
September is when many people begin planning and buying bulbs, even if planting happens a little later – it’s a good time to choose what you want for spring colour.
